Troubleshoot a Monitor and Endpoint
Start from a failed Test Request or Check and isolate public-target, DNS, port, timeout, status, redirect, and method behavior.
Test Request or Check fails
Start with the visible outcome and ask whether the saved Monitor can reach a public Endpoint and receive an accepted final response before its timeout. A Failing Check is Endpoint evidence; missing Check Evidence belongs to the PointWarden execution layer instead.
| Question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Public target | Is the Endpoint an absolute public HTTP or HTTPS URL without embedded credentials? Private services and localhost cannot be monitored. |
| DNS and address | Does public DNS resolve the hostname to a public address? PointWarden rejects private, loopback, link-local, multicast, reserved, and metadata destinations during configuration and before every Check. |
| Standard port | Does HTTP use port 80 or HTTPS use port 443? The free beta does not send Checks to custom outbound ports. |
| Timeout | Did final response headers arrive within the Monitor's total timeout? The supported request budget is 1 through 30 seconds. |
| Accepted status | Does the final HTTP status match the Monitor's accepted exact values or ranges? A reachable response still fails when its status is outside that set. |
| Redirect | For GET or HEAD, did every hop remain public and within the five-redirect limit? An invalid or non-public target, or a sixth redirect, produces a Failing Check. |
| Method | GET and HEAD may follow validated redirects without changing method. POST and PUT never follow redirects and require the repeat-safety acknowledgement because a Scheduled Check may repeat the request. |
Compare the draft or saved settings with Advanced Monitor configuration. Then use the retained final status, latency to final response headers, redirect count, and sanitized failure category to decide which question to revisit.
Keep the evidence boundary safe
Choose the next evidence layer
If no current Scheduled Check evidence exists, switch to PointWarden execution troubleshooting. If a Manual Check passes while Availability or an Incident remains unchanged, go directly to the Manual Check distinction.
